Pet / House Sitting ---Who & how much

If you have pets and leave town for a week, a boarding kennel seems unthinkable if there is an affordable option of friends, family, or paid third party service to come to your place several times per day. Some of us are reluctant to give full access to home to anyone. Have you used one, are they affordable, or , if you use family/friends, how do you thank them?

We have a neighbor that stops by and checks on our pets. We check on their pets when they leave.

Both our son and I have dogs and we sit for each other. Niether of our dogs has ever been in a kennel. I have not had a good experience with another dog going to the kennel.

I used to house/pet sit a lot while in college, in the 90's. $10-15/day. Word of mouth advertising only. I used to stay in the house with the animals, not just come by. If it were just coming by, I'd charge more due to the inconvenience of it.
